Abstract
In the second half of the twentieth century, the concepts of questioning „art as such” either implicitly or explicitly occurred. They took the form of the logical analysis (M. Weitz), the institutional one (G. Dickie), or that derived from the Kantian reflections on the dignity with the reference to individual works of art (Á. Heller). Does this mean that “art as such” lost all its meaning or ceased to exist? Referring to J. Derrida’s concept of hauntology, the author of the article asserts that it exists as a specter that sometimes haunts contemporary artists and theorists. Recognizing the specter requires, however, overcoming reductionism, essentialism and totalitarian thinking.
