Abstract

The article quests after the most affirmative concepts of history and future. Spectral temporality means escaping the present, responding to the others, being exposed to the gaze. The others’ looking from the front and behind coincides with the phenomena of inheritance and the future-to-come, both uncanny and resisting appropriation. Developing the theme of progress, the article deals with the metaphor of “amortization” and “slowing down” as restraining the otherness. Also the meaning of the French future perfect tense (futur antérieur) has been considered. It culminates with identification of the famous expression “always already” with “always arriving” – the idea of promise.
