History of Philosophy as a Road to Philosophy: Gilson’s Project

Abstract

From the methodological point of view, Gilson can be accused of presenting statements that pertain to the history of philosophy in the light of his own philosophical convictions and criticizing sharply from this viewpoint several doctrines of past philosophers. In this paper I present Gilson’s conception of the history of philosophy as a theoretical project, and the way he realized it in his writings. I conclude that on the level Gilson named ‘doctrinal history’ his interpretations can be enclosed within the boundaries of interventionism (to use the term coined by Tatarkiewicz) as a justified activity of a historian of philosophy. On the other hand, I suggest that the statements which fall within the area of the history of philosophy itself should be regarded as uniquely representing Gilson’s own philosophical position. Thus only the two first levels, the history of philosophical literature and the doctrinal history, would form a body of history of philosophy. The third level, the Gilsonian ‘history of philosophy itself,’ which I consider as a specific way in which Gilson expresses his philosophical views, cannot be regarded as history of philosophy and does not therefore fall under the aforementioned accusation.

Keywords: Gilson, doctrinal history, history of philosophy itself.
