Problem of Semiotic Defects according to Kazimierz Ajdukiewicz.

Abstract

The main aim of the article is to present the problem of semiotic defects which was addressed by Kazimierz Ajdukiewicz in his papers. In the preliminary sections, I explain the notion of semiotic defect and its relation with the imperfection of an expression and the misusing of an expression. I present Jacek Jadacki’s classification of semiotic defects as well. The second part of the article deals with Ajdukiewicz’s remarks on various semiotic defects, as well as how to detect and remove them. Firstly, I reconstruct two conceptions of semiotic defects proposed by Ajdukiewicz: (a) his view on the imperfection of language, on the meaning and the use of language and (b) his classification of the mistakes of thoughts when verbalized. Secondly, I present some more detailed problems concerning semiotic defects, i.e. (a) that intensional sentences are elliptical and equivocal, (b) that one kind of questions is elliptical, or (c) that some notions are blurred or vague.
