Abstract
The Path to Value
In the paper I try to substantiate the view that there are objective, unchanging values, independent of what people like and wish, and I try to show how we can get to know them. By the “values” I mean the only entities that may serve as grounding universally valid valuations. I identify the mode of values’ being as con-sistence, which mode is distinguished from subsistence and existence. Then I claim that values con-sist with humanity, i.e. with attributes that make us humans. Consequently, I argue that immediate knowledge of values is impossible – they are not objects that can be “given.” The only way to know that something is value is to show it is congruent with humanity.
Keywords: value, axiology, axiological discourse, modes of being, determination, transcendental reasoning.
