Abstract

The paper focuses on philosophical analysis of Alain Resnais’s 1963 movie Muriel. The study was carried out using tools drawn from contemporary trauma theory, namely texts by Cathy Caruth. The main questions in the article concern the impact of the traumatic past event on the present and the capability of representing it. Caruth’s deconstructivist approach to trauma provides concepts helpful in attempting to answer these questions and suitable for the film analysis.
