Memory and Recollection as Ways of Referring to the Past and the History of Philosophy
Abstract
The aim of this article is to emphasize the value and uniqueness of the cognition of the past in the history of philosophy. This problem was illustrated by the considerations of memory and recall by Aristotle and Thomas Aquinas. The memory and recollection have been tied to the history of philosophy by using the following categories of epistemology: past, temporality, imagination, intellectual nature of memory, virtues, syllogism, common areas, truth and falsity. The works of a historian of philosophy, as well as the functioning of the memory and recollection, are ultimately realized through the pursuit of verity and accuracy to what is available as past.
Keywords: Aristotle, Thomas Aquinas, memory, recollection, cognition of the past, history of philosophy.
