Presocratics in Diogenes Laertius – the Ionian Philosophy

Abstract

Diogenes Laertius in his Lives of Eminent Philosophers proposed two beginnings of philosophy: the Ionian commencing with Anaximander and the Italian commencing with Pythagoras. As the above title and subtitle indicate, we offer a new Polish translation of Diogenes Laertius’ Presocratic philosophers from the Ionian current, i.e., Thales, Anaximander, Anaximenes, and then Anaxagoras, Archelaos, Leukippus, Democritus, Pythagoras and Diogenes of Apollonia. In the introduction, we also provide general information on the selection and account of the Presocratics as well as the latest editions and translation of Diogenes Laertius’ work. In the next paper of this series, we give a translation of the Italian school, i.e., the Pythagoreans and the Eleatics.

Keywords: Diogenes Laertius, Presocratics, the Ionian philosophy, Polish translation.
