Abstract
Tomáš G. Masaryk’s Classification of the Sciences
The aim of the article is to characterize and analyze the classification of the sciences introduced by Masaryk. Masaryk’s concept is an attempt at developing and completing Comte’s classification. The Czech philosopher finds the division of sciences into abstract and concrete the most important one. The criterion of the division constitutes the subject of the sciences, which in turn results from a specific category of subjects. Masaryk’s novelty is the introduction of new sciences such as linguistics, aesthetics or logic into the classification. Philosophy (metaphysics) also takes place among them in this classification – as the science which presents being in the most general form.
Keywords: T.G. Masaryk, Czech philosophy, classification of the sciences.
